The name Camera Oscura (or Camera Obscura) comes from the first image grabbing device created by man, which later evolved to the photographic camera, cinema and the video camera.
Even though the history of the camera obscura can be traced all the way back to the 5th Century BC in China, it isn’t until the 19th century that the first partially successful photograph was taken. Or... so we think!
There is another theory about what the first successful picture is in relatively recent history. It is claimed that the great polymath, Leonardo Da Vinci, was commissioned by the church to create something that will reenforce the faith.
The theory states that what Leonardo came up with was the Turin Shroud alleged by the church to be an image of Christ. What it may actually be is a picture of Leonardo himself using a camera obscura, centuries before the first images that emerged in the 19th century.
The name of this project is therefore dedicated to Leonardo, who may have created one of the greatest promotional images of all time.
